Library services at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom

Editorial by Joanne Dillon (JD), Literacy and Learning Programmes Librarian

All of us here are excited about the opening of Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom on Saturday 18 November not only because it’s such an amazing facility but because it will allow us to provide a wider range of activities for library users.

Library services will be available from 12 noon on Saturday, after the offical opening ceremonies have been enjoyed. Staff will be on site to show you around our collections so you can find your favourite authors and familiarise yourself with the new library layout.

We have doubled the number of public internet computers from 4 in the old Foxton Library to 8 for Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom which will make it easier for you to check your emails, update your CV, apply for jobs, stay up to date with the news or just check out your social media.

With more space we will be able to enhance the range of services and programmes that libraries will be able to offer. Storytelling, LEGO Club and holiday programmes will continue for our young library members and their families.

For adults we are excited to be launching our Stepping Up computer workshops which are free 1-2 hour computer workshops that aim to gently increase your confidence at using phones, tablets and computers. We are launching these workshops with Introduction to Tablets from 10am-12pm on Thursday 25 January and Employment Readiness from 10am-12pm on Wednesday 31 January. You can book these workshops on the Stepping Up website at www.steppingup.nz or speak with a library staff member.

Prior to that we are offering three ePetting Zoos at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom to provide you with an opportunity to try out a range of different electronic devices – eReaders, tablets and Chromebooks. Staff will be on hand to explain the differences and similarities between different options, i.e. an iPad and an Android tablet. These ePetting Zoos are popular leading up to and after Christmas as people are making decisions about what to buy as gifts and for the new school year. We also look forward to discussing with you what other learning opportunities you would like so we can target our programmes to suit our customer needs.

ePetting Zoos at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom:

10am-12pm        Tuesday 28 November
2pm-4pm            Thursday 7 December
10am-12pm        Thursday 11 January

Please do come and talk to the library, literacy, learning and heritage staff at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom and let us know what services and programmes you would attend if they were available now we have the space to provide them.
