Each month Te Takere offers a range of free computer workshops as part of the Stepping Up programme that is run in partnership with the 2020 Trust. Stepping UP is free community-based training that helps adults build their digital skills in small easy steps. We invite you to attend these workshops to gently introduce yourselves to the tools which will help you stay in touch with family members and to pursue hobbies and employment opportunities.

The term ‘digital skills’ these days refers to a huge range of topics, many of which focus on mobile devices like phones, tablets, cameras and eReaders. The workshops are at an introductory level and taught by our staff who understand what it’s like to be confronted with a new piece of technology. The workshops are only 1-2 hours long and we teach at a pace comfortable for all participants.

Workshops are usually held in our Education Suite which is accessed off the Youth Space. It also has its own entrance at 10 Bath Street. From time to time we need to use a different space so just check at the Service Desk when you arrive and we’ll show you to the correct venue.

Topics coming up over the next six weeks include:

There are 30 workshops in the Stepping Up suite – we aim to deliver a variety of these each month so other topics you can look forward to include: Home Finances, eBooks and eReaders, Introduction to Tablets, Skype and YouTube. The 2020 Trust Stepping Up team includes librarians from around New Zealand who develop new workshops from time to time. We always want input from our customers so we’d like to hear your suggestions so we can prepare course material that meets your needs.

While the workshops are all free, we do need you to register your attendance so we can prepare for the right number of students. If you have access to the internet you can register at http://steppingup.nz. Alternatively you can email us at [email protected], phone (06) 368 1953 or speak to a staff member next time you visit Te Takere.

If you’re a bit worried about taking the first step, feel free to register with a family member, friend or neighbour. We often find that the people attending our workshops gain in confidence just from knowing they’re not the only one learning the new technologies.

We look forward to helping you to Step Up on your journey to learn new digital technologies.

Also, don’t forget that our drop-in Te Reo sessions are on from 6pm each Wednesday night.
