Learn2Fly
One of our library goals involves technology so that we can let our community learn and ask questions about things they are interested to try out, but not necessarily purchase for themselves. We work with everything from virtual reality to robotics, from drones to even the simple Lego brick. This type of learning is called STEM Learning. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Perfect subjects for a library you might say. Combining books on STEM with practical, hands on sessions is a perfect way to help young people, and adults, to develop an interest in technology and engineering.
Drones are currently one of the biggest buzzes in the technology community, so for us, it was a perfect fit for what we could call “Show and Tech.” We’re letting people go hands on with our technology and, perhaps more importantly, engaging in discussions about what the real-world applications are.
There is a lot going on with drones right now: people have questions about what it means for privacy, how it’s going to affect the airspace, and what regulations are being put in place, examples of them being used, etc. You can certainly have these conversations with people at any time, but when they are able to feel a drone in their hands and see a quick flight demo in person, their imaginations are sparked and they begin to create their own story of what the future of technology will look like.
This spring holiday young people aged 12- 16 will learn about the safety and applications of drones from a real life drone pilot, then have a go at building, programming and controlling an Airblock modular hovercraft and airblock drone. They will have a few fun games to help them learn about using the controls.
This hands on experience is not only great fun, it aids in the development of core skills such as fine and gross motor skills. There’s even a little bit of physics in there – gravity. Who knew physics could be fun!
So I can imagine a lot of you grown-ups are now thinking, “What about me? Can I sign up?” Embrace the twelve year old you and watch this space for all kinds of show and tech.

Heritage room:
The Heritage rooms at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō are manned by volunteers 10am-12.30 pm Monday to Saturday. Monday to Saturday and Wednesday and Thursday afternoons 1.00pm – 3.00pm. Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom Heritage Room has the Research librarian available all day every Friday.
