As the festive season rolls in, we here at Libraries Horowhenua have a shiny new eLibrary gift … a brand new ePlatform to enjoy!

Our eLibrary is a popular service, which is available for free with your Libraries Horowhenua membership or eMembership. Over these past months, we’ve been adding to our existing eLibrary offerings, diversifying our ePlatforms to ensure that our community can get the best selection for their digital reading needs. Our eLibrary is open twenty four hours, seven days a week.

  • Libby/OverDrive is one of our original ePlatforms, and one of the most popular. It has a regularly updated and wide selection of 35,000+ eBooks and eAudiobooks to enjoy.
  • Lingogo is the unique library app packed with Māori and Pasifika stories. Perfect for language learners of all ages and levels, it uses an interactive dual-language format.
  • Cloud Library also has a vast eBook and eAudiobook collection, often with less wait times as well as the potential for simultaneous issues on the same book.

Our newest addition is called Hoopla, and is a unique ePlatform that delivers an enormous selection of digital content to our customers, as seamlessly as possible. While it has eBooks and eAudiobooks, it also has music, TV shows and movies on offer, as well as a stellar collection of comics and graphic novels.

Hoopla, like all our other ePlatforms, is available for free with your Libraries Horowhenua membership. All you need to do is go to www.hoopladigital.co.nz , sign up using your email, and then you can access our Libraries Horowhenua catalogue with your card number and password. You can have a maximum of 10 Hoopla borrows in a month.

And with the festive season upon us, it is a good time to share what makes a great gift for those who want to enjoy our free public library content.

All our ePlatforms can be enjoyed as downloadable apps, so technology such as tablets, smartphones, iPads and iPhones are perfect for this. All you need to do is download the required ePlatform app, and you’re away! It need not be the most expensive or fancy tablet, one within your budget and that suits your needs is fine.

eReaders are a popular option as well but do note that Kindles are not currently compatible with our free public library content.

A pair of Headphones could be a great wee stocking filler so that you can listen to your book on the go or while you potter around the house. The sleep timer functions mean you can also listen in bed, without worrying about falling asleep and missing the vital half of the story!

Kiwiana Summer Reading Programme Registrations are open now!

The Summer Reading Programme will run in Levin, Foxton and Shannon Libraries from 13th December to 21st January. The programme aims to encourage and promote books, libraries and the fun of reading through incentive awards, activities and storytellers. Children will read a library book, write or draw a review, come to the library to report in and talk about the book or complete a review online. You can also pick up some craft activities from your library to keep you busy at home.

Those who complete the programme will receive an invitation to the Grand Finale. Each child will be presented with a certificate and a new book. This year the finale in Levin and Foxton will be at the pools. Shannon children will have a party in Shannon library.

These programmes are offered free of charge with support from the Friends of the library.

Bring your beach towel, create your bubble and enjoy some entertainment from our favourite magician Zappo.
