November is upon us. Good weather is making itself known, I’ve heard the somewhat premature hum of Christmas music on the wind, and here at Libraries Horowhenua… we have prizes to be won!

On Monday we launched our eLibrary eXtravaganza, an exciting celebration of all things to do with our Libraries Horowhenua eLibrary. We have some fantastic prizes that’ll be sure to help you on your digital reading journey. Up for grabs is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 6 Lite, Senheiser HD Wireless headphones, PB Tech vouchers, Pad Pods and spot prizes. To be in to win one of these goodies, all you need to do is issue at least one item from our eLibrary, and you’ll be entered automatically.

Our eLibrary has thousands of eBooks and eAudiobooks available for free, with your Libraries Horowhenua membership or eMembership. Have your library at your fingertips… anytime, anywhere, even when our facilities are closed. Reading digitally can sometimes feel like you’re cheating on good ol’ faithful regular books. I myself was a traditionalist in that vein. However I have come to realise that reading digitally isn’t bad or scary, it’s a wonderful augmentation to my reading life. It offers more ways to access and enjoy books, in all manner of places and spaces. What’s not to love?

Reading digitally can have great benefits, like being able to carry many books all on one device, you’ll never run dry. You can sync your reading over different devices and enjoy a seamless experience. There are fabulous accessibility features such as being able to increase font size, font type and background lighting. There’s specific fonts available to improve the reading experience for those with dyslexia. If you’re reading on a tablet, you’ll have amazing colours, those graphic novels will really pop! You can change the language options on some books, and some children’s books even have read-along audio. Have you ever read a book while mowing the lawns or scrubbing the shower? I have… thanks to eAudiobooks. Honestly, there’s a lot to be gained from reading digitally, I encourage you to add it to your repertoire.

Our eLibrary has three amazing ePlatforms on offer, available free with your Libraries Horowhenua membership or eMembership. Libby/OverDrive is packed full of thousands of eBooks and eAudiobooks. Lingogo is our portal for epic bilingual stories in Māori and Pacific Languages. It’s an app you can download to your device of choice, and enjoy the unique, interactive dual-language format. Perfect for language learners of all levels! Our newest addition to our eLibrary is Cloud Library, which can be enjoyed through the app or through your web-browser. It has a wide array of eBooks and eAudiobooks, including the catalogue from our now defunct Wheelers ePlatform. There’s sure to be something for everyone.
