The School Holidays are fast approaching and we have a cheddarific treat for your children this April! Our children’s holiday programme is based around the Geronimo Stilton books. There will be crafts and activities including cheese tasting and a special mystery hunt to complete.

Have you heard of Geronimo Stilton? If you are under twelve the answer is likely yes! The series has sold over 140 million copies worldwide, and with 249 editions it is one of the best-selling book series ever written.

The Geronimo Stilton series is about a family of adventurous mice. The title character is credited as its author, but is actually written by Italian author Elisabetta Dami.  Dami is as prolific a writer as James Patterson. Patterson has written 147 novels since 1976. In comparison, there have been an astounding 71 books published in the Geronimo Stilton series since 2000. In addition there are now numerous spinoffs from the main series as well as a TV show, musical theatre, comics, graphic novels and even video games. So what makes this series so popular with children and why should we love the books?

Geronimo, the anxiety-ridden editor of The Rodent's Gazette, is dragged along on adventures with his adrenaline-junkie sister, Thea, his buffoon of a cousin, Trap, and his sweet nephew, Benjamin. Despite resisting any kind of risky behaviour in his everyday life, he finds himself in the middle of the jungle, upside-down in Thea's airplane, face-to-face with a mummy, or caught in any other hare-brained scheme his family concocts. When the mice go on adventures, solve mysteries, and overcome fears, they learn lessons about patience and perseverance.  Geronimo is nervous about a lot of things, but tries to overcome his fears. Children can identify with these feelings and talking about the book can open up conversations about developing strategies to cope with feelings of stress or anxiety. Families can talk about how siblings Thea and Geronimo Stilton behave in the Geronimo Stilton series. They tease and harass, but are also supportive and look out for each other.

There is truly a Geronimo Stilton book for every type of reader with numerous arcs that feature diverse and exciting themes, and colourful interior spreads that support education and literacy. Just like Nora Roberts or James Patterson readers, children enjoy reading books with a similar style and with identifiable characters. Its colourful art and varied text sizes and fun fonts, can even help reluctant readers engage with each page of the story. The books weave non-fiction facts into a fun fictional storyline bringing history alive for children.

Everyone enjoys a good mystery so dive into the adventurous world of Geronimo Stilton and bring the kids along to our fabumouse holiday programme this April!
