Kia ora koutou! My name is Renee and I’ll be your Pam-replacement this week. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying her Busman’s holiday dispatches, living vicariously through her tales of international libraries and Harry Potter fun. We thought it might be time we left her in peace though, to enjoy the rest of her jaunt, so here I am (no need for transfiguration or Polyjuice Potion). Some of you may know me, I can usually be found at Shannon Library or Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō, living my best library-life, keen to discuss my latest reads!

This week saw the start of ‘Plastic-Free July’, a global initiative that aims to reduce single-use plastic waste. It focuses on the small changes that we as individuals can make, which will contribute to a global effort. Issues as large as plastic-pollution can almost overwhelm people into inactivity, but it’s like Desmond Tutu once said… “There is only one way to eat an elephant: a bite at a time.” No, I don’t mean eat elephants for real, but rather that big things can be conquered in small bits. I encourage you to go to www.plasticfreejuly.org and check out their awesome resources for this kaupapa. Don’t forget, we have books that’ll get you started too! We can all make headway together by just doing our bit. Start small and stick to it! Watch an idea turn into a habit, turn into a way of life.

Thinking about Plastic-Free July and the larger environmental movement got me wondering on the role libraries can play in helping save the world. Yes, that’s probably idealistic and a bit hyperbolic but bear with me. A key principle in reducing waste and consumption is sharing & borrowing. Nobody does that better than a library! It’s literally a bedrock principle of ours. I wonder how much carbon, resources and travel miles go into a new book? It is a much better use of said resources for one book to go out dozens of times via the library, than for those dozens of people to each buy a new copy for themselves. Plus, it’ll save you money, and it might reduce the amount of Marie Kondo de-cluttering you need. Our books (and other borrowable goodies) also go on to live second lives via our Book Sales. On that note, keep an eye out for our upcoming Friends of the Library book sale, starting next week.

Can’t find the book you’re after? Have you tried making a suggestion to purchase? You can do this by logging into your library card via our online catalogue, and using the purchase suggestions section. Let us know what you might like! While we can’t guarantee we’ll get everything, we’ll certainly consider them all!

Also, don’t forget that we have the fab Greenheart Hub collection bins at our Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom and Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō sites. Use these to donate things such as bread-bags, twine and CD’s, and they’ll be reused and remade into things such as baskets and jewellery. Make sure you read the signs though, and donate accordingly.
