If you are a regular user of our library Facebook accounts you will know that we often post nostalgic pictures of the past, accompanied by the tag #ThrowbackThursday, #MemoriesOnMonday or #WindbackWednesday. They are used by libraries and people all over the world to share and relive their past experiences through photographs, stories, video clips or articles.
Most people love to relive past memories whether it be their childhood, old relationships, past vacations, old songs, or anything that gives them a happy and nostalgic feeling. We all love to share our memories and stories with others. The Facebook posts are always incredibly popular, often reaching up to four thousand people. It’s a great joy to be able to read about people’s own stories about the places we feature. The images all come from Kete Horowhenua, our community built digital library of arts, cultural and heritage resources for and about Horowhenua.
Kete Horowhenua is a place where we can celebrate who we are, how we live and what we do, through photographs, video, audio footage and stories. We want to capture the memories and stories that are our heritage, stories that others can add their own memories and knowledge to as well. Currently there are 23,726 images 2,968 documents and 106 audio files available on Kete, all from the recent and distant past.
Libraries Horowhenua wants everyone to enjoy these items and we realise not everyone can access our online website or wants to use Facebook. Fortunately it’s now going to be possible to hear about some of our wonderful collection in a fortnightly article in your very own Horowhenua Chronicle. The Chronicle has been at the forefront of capturing some of the great stories and images from our area for the last one hundred years so it seems an apt place to share some of these memories within its pages.
If this week’s Kete Horowhenua column by Kiri Pepene whets your appetite for local history pop into your local library and ask for help to access Kete. If you want help to record the regions history by digitising family histories and photos or have any heritage questions please visit the Libraries Horowhenua Heritage Rooms in Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō and Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom. There are heritage volunteers on hand in Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō Monday to Friday from 10am to 12:30pm, and Wednesday and Thursday afternoons 1.00pm – 3.00pm and a librarian is available at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom on a Friday. You can also book an appointment by visiting tetakere.org.nz.
