By the time you read this, Pam should have returned to these antipodean shores! Maybe laden with Harry Potter mementos, possibly with a few new library cards, definitely with some memories of home to bring … home. Because home can be many places at once. Welcome back, Pam!
One thing about travelling across the globe is shifting through seasons in days rather than months. For Pam, that means arriving home to a southern hemisphere winter. I used to think I was a summer lover only, balking at the thought of crisp air, short days. I have since realised my error, learning to embrace each season for its gifts. Winter is upon us and I am thrilled! What’s winter perfect for? Cosy reading! We all have our warm winter reading favourites, safe choices that never disappoint. In my case this would be some Ann Cleeves. I love a classic crime novel, where the locale is a character in itself. However, I thought for this week’s winter reads I’d look a bit out of the box, at the other parts of our catalogue that I am enjoying.
E-Books
Book purists, hear me out! I am one of you! However, I am also a parent, most recently to twins, who are now three. In my parenting career I have spent an obscene amount of hours in the dark or low light. Everything from night-feeding, to worried bedside vigils and hospital stays, to (current stage) me attempting to cajole my toddlers to go to sleep. It all happens in the near dark. I wish I’d put an e-reader on my baby registry! I could have been reading all that time, instead of mindlessly scrolling my phone or staring into the salt-lamp tinged black. E-books have been a lifeline in the dark. Even better, they’re available for free if you have a library card and a suitable device.
Top pick:The Library Book by Susan Orlean - An intriguing investigation of the 1986 Los Angeles Public Library fire. It also casts light onto the role and importance of libraries.
Graphic Novels
Did you know, we have graphic novels that span all ages? From children to teen to adult! I am new to this genre, but have come to the love the fast paced storytelling and fabulous artwork. I’m glad I ventured out of my reading zone!
Top pick:World of Wakanda by Roxane Gay - A prequel to Black Panther, this powerful tale looks into the lives of the Dora Milaje, the all-female elite special forces of Wakanda.
