Stories and storytelling are a vital part of the human experience, steadfast through time and place. They can be many things, shape-shifting as they are viewed from different angles. They can yell truths, whisper secrets, mutter inaccuracies and sow seeds of all kinds. Libraries have long been the houses to hold such wonders.

Here at Libraries Horowhenua, we pride ourselves in having stories available in various forms. From the beloved book to the modern e-book, audio-books, DVDs and everything in between, stories jump from our shelves in all manner of ways. Another unique way we like to share stories is through our community exhibition spaces, our gallery space at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō and Shannon Library. Art is a powerful and significant communicator, and it is important to us to help share the voices of our region.

Both spaces are available to book for exhibitions, and we are always on the lookout for artists from our community. Our main gallery at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō is located in the heart of our building with plenty of foot traffic. Large panels and a selection of cabinets’ means it’s perfect for various mediums; exhibitions are up for the calendar month. Shannon Library is a more intimate space, with works hung above the book-shelves and a 4 – 8 week exhibition time, depending on availability.

If you think you might be interested in exhibiting with us, head over to our website www.tetakere.org.nz/Bookings to make an enquiry and start the selection process. There can be a wait time, but don’t let that deter you, submitting a completed application in is the only way to ensure you can be considered should a cancellation come up, or when bookings open for 2021. In the meantime, make sure to come down regularly and see what’s on exhibition!
