Men’s Health Week

I love men! I love my Dad, my brothers, my brother in law, my nephew, my Grandpa, Grandad, uncles, friends and colleagues. Most of all I love my husband and my son.

Regardless of age, gender, culture, sexuality, religion - men matter. Libraries Horowhenua will be taking part in Men’s Health week from June 10. We strongly believe we all need to take more responsibility for our own health and the health of our men. You may wonder, why? What has this got to do with libraries?

Libraries Horowhenua passionately believes that our spaces are important places of physical, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing. It’s a place where men (and everyone else of course) can gather without barriers. Our Libraries can and do play an active role in helping to achieve a high quality of living. They are public spaces that are hubs for their communities, places of rest and quiet, as well as places of interaction where people connect with each other. It’s a place of knowledge and empowerment where we find information to make a difference to our lives and the lives of others.

While organising this month’s Men’s Health week I have to admit I was very surprised by the data surrounding men’s health in New Zealand. The thing is I shouldn’t be surprised, all of us have been touched in some way by the sickness or death of men we love.

Men are on the back foot from the start. A boy born today will live nearly four years less than a girl born on the same day. He will be over 20% more likely to die of a heart attack than the girl, and almost 30% more likely to get diabetes. Worse, he is three times more likely to die by suicide or in a motor vehicle accident. Six out of ten New Zealand males are overweight; nearly one in four smokes; and forty are diagnosed each day as having diabetes. Every 90 minutes one New Zealander dies of heart disease. Shocking numbers! So let’s focus on helping one another to make a change and reduce these numbers. We owe it to the ones we love and who love us.

What’s On

Bike & Blend
Getting healthy needn’t be hard and we needn’t be preachy about it – small steps can really make a big difference. And it can be fun, which is why we are having a bike and blend challenge at our libraries all week. Jump on our special bike, pedal for around 30 seconds and voila you have got yourself a delicious and healthy smoothie! We will have two bikes so you could even challenge a mate to see who can spin the fastest smoothie. Check out our times below!
