As many people already know, the bane of my library life is shelving non-fiction books. However I have one genre of books which, as one of the highest non-fiction items loaned at the library, all need shelving in the same place, making them easy to find, order and place. Some of our popular titles are: from Nigella Lawson, How to be a domestic goddess: Baking and the art of comfort cooking; Bake favourite home-made recipes by Allyson Gofton; The joy of vegan baking by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau; and with no surprise, Mary Berry's baking bible by Mary Berry. The rise of baking (pun intended) has saved my sanity.
With TV shows, books and celebrity chefs all singing the praises of the joys of baking, it seems home baking is enjoying a true renaissance.
Baking is an activity which takes a lot of us back to our childhood. I have strong memories of baking with my Grandmother who was a Cook in a war hospital during World War 2. (She met my Grandfather, who was a patient, while both were having a fly cigarette round the back of the hospital yard.)
Gran would do a mass bake on a Friday in preparation for the family visits over the weekend. With eleven children and umpteen ‘grand-weans’ this could be expensive. Looking back, her specialities were driven by budget. We loved her Welsh plate cake which we called apple cake or fly cake (currants), Empire biscuits, and for special occasions Clootie Dumpling. All of those recipes had low cost or home grown ingredients; butter (back when butter was cheap); flour; small amounts of sugar; and fruit. It does make you wonder whether baking’s revival can be attributed to a lack of dough (again pun intended) and, with everyone these days being more diet conscious, the fact that you know exactly what ingredients are in your food is a bonus too. It is clear though that many have embraced baking because of its enjoyment factor.
Everyone enjoys new challenges and recipes but thankfully treasured recipes are often passed down through generations. Each time I bake, I swear I smell the distinct aroma of Gran’s tobacco. Like most though, my Gran believed that offering food to somebody else is just as much a comfort to the person who’s serving and offering as to the person receiving it.
Let’s bake to that.
