Celebrating Harry Potter at Horowhenua Libraries

Deborah Macdonald Childrens Librarian

School holidays are fast approaching and once again we have an exciting programme lined up at each of the Libraries for your children.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter books and over the holidays we will be running crafts and activities based around this theme.  Bring the kids along to make a Harry Potter wand, some delicious lemon sherbet or they may like to create their own book of magic! There will be a different activity every day - something for everyone.  At the finale they will be decorating biscuits, drinking butter beer and watching the Harry Potter movie that started it all.

Dates and times as follows:

  • Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō:  Both weeks of the holidays, 16th - 27th April. 10am to 12pm.
  • Foxton Library: First week of the holidays, 16th-20th April. 10.30am - 11.30am
  • Shannon Library: First week of the holidays. 2pm to 3pm.

Please note the programme will not be available on the 25th of April, Anzac Day.

The programme is free in all three libraries.

Ultimate School Holiday Pass

Don’t forget to pick up an “Ultimate School Holiday Pass” which can be purchased from Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō and the Levin Aquatic Centre.  They are awesome value for your money - for $20 your child will get:

  • A $10 Top up on a library card
  • 1 Child Movie Pass - Focal Point
  • 1 Cheesy Meal Combo - McDonalds
  • 1 Child Swim Pass - Levin Aquatic Centre

Tinkercad Club

In Term 2 we are replacing our Roblox club with a Tinkercad club, with the aim of introducing young people to even more digital tools. Tinkercad is a free, online 3D design tool. Our staff will teach students some 3D design techniques then set them free to work on individual projects. At the end of term we will try printing each of the designs on a 3D printer. Tinkercad Club is every Monday from 3.30-5.00pm, starting on Monday 7 May. The club is free to attend and children aged 8 and over are invited to register.

Award winning Author

Come and meet Indian-born novelist Rajorshi Chakraborti, award-winning author of five novels and a collection of short fiction. Join him while he talks about his new novel where he explores the divergence of perceptions, how relationships can become distorted by guilt and remorse, and how we choose what we are willing to see. This is a truly gripping novel that will keep you avidly engaged.

Saturday, 14th April at 2pm at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō.  Free admission.
