The closure of most of New Zealand’s video hire stores has meant that public libraries are often the only place left where you can dire a DVD.

Online streaming services like Netflix, Lightbox and Beamafilm are great for conveniency and for some they are affordable.  But to make it worthwhile watching, you also need high speed internet.

Libraries Horowhenua’s DVD collection differs from that of a video hire business in that we try to provide content that will appeal to a wide range of people – from pre-schoolers who enjoy repetitive stories and songs to adults wanting to relax in front of a blockbuster movie or follow an exercise tutorial.  We also have television series which are hugely popular as well as international movies with English subtitles

Our newest and most popular DVDs cost $2.50 per week and the rest of the collection is  free to borrow. Any movies that are rated R16 or above must be borrowed by an adult using an adult’s library card to ensure we comply with New Zealand classification labels.

Feature films come out within months of their final showing at the cinema so we already have a number of 2017 movies in our collection. So if you have missed any of these at the cinema, have a look for them next time you’re visiting your nearest library or place a reserve to go onto the waiting list.
