Magical celebration comes to Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō

There’s magic in the air at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō.
Levin’s cultural and community centre hosts Harry’s 21st, a celebration of wizardry and magic, from 27 July to 4 August.
Civic & Community Events Coordinator Melissa Steedman said the week-long programme is packed full of magical fun, with events for people of all ages to enjoy.
“We’ll have a ball, movies, magical games, a market, virtual reality sessions, wand-making and charms classes, a party and a special tour of Owlcatraz,” she said.
On 31 July, there will be a costume party to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the world’s best-selling book series, with a giant community cake, games, and prizes.
Another highlight of the programme is the Magical Ball from 6:30pm on Saturday 3 August, a night of fun and frivolity at the Levin RSA for witches and wizards aged 18 years and over, including live entertainment, dinner and cocktails. Tickets are $55 from Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō or Eventbrite.
Earlier that day, the Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō car park transforms into a magical market between 10am and 3:30pm, with unique stalls and delicious food.
For those who want to improve their wizarding skills, there will be charms classes on offer for those aged five to eight years and those aged eight years and over on 27 July; and wand-making classes on 27 and 28 July, with 15 places for children and 15 for adults in each of two workshops.
“The charms classes will be hands-on experiences for participants to make things and then explore the scientific ‘magic’ behind it. We’ll be doing a levitating feather experiment, shrink a keepsake, and practice a disappearing charm on some parchment,” Ms Steedman said.
“And in the wand-making classes, participants will create their own wand under the tuition of scenic design and props painter ‘Professor’ W. Therese Eberhard, who has worked on such well-known movies as Avatar, The Hobbit and Mortal Engines.”
Participant numbers for charms and wand-making classes are limited, so registration at your local library is essential. Charms classes are free, and wand-making classes are $30 for adults and free for children.
