A Story to Myself

Artists often do work that speaks to various motivations – to illustrate a concept or idea, totell a story, to challenge, to contemplate or just look spectacular. Often work is done that can be received by many people and multiple sites, other times a much smaller viewership may be in mind, maybe nobody at all. An artist’s work can be layered with all these considerations and more.

Sometimes though, a piece is just as much as a story to the artist than to others. The story an artist tells themselves about their work may be inherently private and different from the story presented to an external audience, or it may marry up. It may be a story about the journey undertaken to make the piece which diverges from its final form, or it may be just a whispered promise of potential at the start of the process.

For this exhibition artists from around Aotearoa have been invited by local photographer artist Renee Faleseuga to share a piece of work, and alongside it, share their story to themselves.
