Can you believe we are three weeks into January already? Where does the time go? February is inching closer, and we have a busy time planned! The month of love is a traditional one for celebrating all things romance. But did you know… February the 14th is not only Valentine’s Day, it's also Library Lover’s Day? It is a day to honour libraries, librarians, bookworms, and library lovers in your life. Keep an eye out next month for some fun activities about loving your library.

Much like finding love, what happens if that book is elusive? We pride ourselves on having an excellent collection, but what if you simply cannot find it in our catalogue? It may not be a new book or a book that fits outside of the range of our collection. Never fear, our librarians can play cupid with a little help from other libraries and our interloan service.

Libraries cannot own every title or creative written work that has ever been created. A long, long time ago, in the pre-Gutenberg press era, and even for quite some time beyond, it was possible to have a “complete” library, consisting of all or almost all of the books on a given subject. This is no longer a possibility, even though Google Books is trying to make it a reality by attempting to scan and digitally preserve every book in the world (“Google Books,” 2010). There are simply too many different works out there, and they are being created faster than libraries can collect them.

Libraries Horowhenua provides an interlibrary loan (interloan) service to enable members to borrow items or obtain copies of items from other libraries and suppliers in New Zealand and overseas. This ensures that members are able to access a broad range of resources and specifically addresses the needs for members to access items that are outside the scope of our collection. It’s an important service for our customers and as such we try to minimise the costs involved.

Interlibrary loaning between libraries works because it is reciprocal, if we borrow we must also lend in return. It's all about sharing the love!

We have a smorgasbord of delightful activities happening in our libraries in the coming weeks. Our refashioned Friends of the Library Book Sale will be on throughout January. Pop down regularly and grab yourself some literary bargains, new stock is added daily. The Adult Reading Challenge is approaching its 3rd week, and is a fantastic way to engage with new material. This week’s challenge has been to read a book someone has recommended, which is always a great way to read something tantalising and different. Check out our Libraries Horowhenua catalogue for booklists and recommendations. Inflatable Kingdome is on Friday 21 January, and is sure to be a hit with the kids. February is going to be something to look forward to. We will be celebrating Chinese New Year and the incoming Year of the Tiger as well as our bi-annual Festival of Stories. Watch this space!
