Accessibility affects us all!
When you visit a supermarket you expect to be able to find the items you need straight away. By recognising that different people have different needs and preferences, the supermarket makes it easy for people to choose the things that suit them (and tempt them). In a similar way, Libraries Horowhenua understands that library users have diverse needs and that it is our role to ensure that these needs are met for each person visiting the library. This does mean we have to be clever, empathise and try to forward think about each customer’s individual needs. We have to be super librarians!
Happily, libraries have the potential to meet a very wide range of accessibility needs. As well as making sure our space is comfortable, spacious and welcoming to everyone, it’s very important for us to make sure there are no physical barriers for anyone in our community who uses this space. For example, having a lift in the library is essential for a person who uses a wheelchair and it is also important for a parent with a pram.
But what about those people who are physically unable to visit the library? For people who are housebound, we have a wonderful service called Homelink. You can let us know what genre and format you are interested in so we will select the best materials to be delivered to you. It could be loosely compared to a supermarket home delivery service but with even more of a personal touch. A volunteer courier will then pick up and deliver these materials to your door. This is a free service proudly supported by the volunteers of Libraries Horowhenua. To register for this service please phone (06) 368 1953 or email [email protected]
Going back to the supermarket analogy, sometimes I forget my shopping list and cannot decide what I need. I may even want a change and fancy something new and different to eat. And I have found myself a bit lost in the supermarkets at times. The best source of help then is the people who work there and it’s true of libraries too! Pop in and talk to your friendly librarian – they can help match your needs! They might even recommend the latest bestseller too!

Saturday 2 December: Christmas Parade & Carnival
We want everyone to enjoy the Christmas Parade and Carnival. So this year we will have a special area where those members of our community who have a disability, mobility or health condition can plan their day, sit back and enjoy.
The zones provide:
• Parking close to the parade and carnival for minimal walking distance.
• Accessible seating area with space for wheelchair and mobility device users
• A comfortable area for assistance dogs.
• Accessible toilet facilities (Carnival area only)
Registrations are essential – we want to ensure we have enough space and chairs so that everyone can enjoy the Parade and the Carnival. Please email [email protected]
